SSM Health's operating income jumps 72% in Q1

SSM Health saw revenues rise in the first quarter of 2019, and the St. Louis-based health system ended the three-month period with higher operating income than in the same quarter of 2018, according to unaudited financial documents released May 20.

SSM Health's revenues climbed 5.1 percent year over year to $1.97 billion in the first quarter of 2019. While net patient service revenue was essentially flat year over year, premium and other operating revenues were up 16.1 percent in the first quarter of 2019.

After factoring in operating expenses, which climbed 3.6 percent year over year, SSM Health ended the first quarter of 2019 with operating income of $72.97 million. That's up 72 percent from the first quarter of 2018, when the health system reported operating income of $42.48 million.

SSM Health recorded nonoperating gains of $127.81 million in the first quarter of this year, which boosted the system's net income to $200.6 million. During the first quarter of 2018, SSM Health reported nonoperating gains of $21.5 million and net income of $64.38 million.
