Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital reports $1.9M loss

St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital reported an overall loss of $1.9 million for the three months ending Sept. 30, according to a Nov. 14 filing.

Operating income for the hospital totaled $9.8 million for the period on revenue of $183.4 million.

Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is part of the obligated group of the Johns Hopkins Health System. The Baltimore-based system reported an operating income of $33.2 million on revenue of $2.2 billion for the period.

The hospital has been ordered to pay $261 million in damages to the family of 17-year-old Maya Kowalski, whose case was made famous by a Netflix documentary. Doubts have been raised over the hospital's ability to eventually pay any funds associated with the case from operating earnings, potentially forcing it into its cash reserves.

The health system reiterated its willingness to potentially appeal the case in the filing.

"JHACH believes that the care provided was appropriate and within the standard of care in the treatment of the patient," according to the filing.
