$12M grant puts shuttered Georgia hospital one step closer to reopening

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has provided $11.8 million in federal funding to Randolph County (Ga.) Hospital Authority, which could support reopening efforts for the shuttered Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Center in Cuthbert, Ga.

The 25-bed critical access hospital closed in October 2020 due to financial troubles that were intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Steve Whatley, chairman of Randolph County Hospital Commission, said the funding will help the authority advance its goal of reopening the hospital, said in an April 17 news release.

In late March, the county hospital authority shared it was to receive $6.3 million in federal funding to help with hospital reopening efforts.

The hospital commission will put together a sustainable model at "some point" with help from the funding, Mr. Whatley said in the release.
