10 best, worst states for mental healthcare

Seven of the 10 worst states in the U.S. for mental healthcare are in the South, while seven of the 10 best states in the U.S. for mental healthcare are in the East, according to a new Forbes Advisor study.

To determine the worst states for mental healthcare, Forbes Advisor compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Mental Health America. States were compared across seven metrics that measured access to and availability of mental healthcare.

Here are the best states in the U.S. for mental healthcare, according to the study:

1. Vermont

2. Massachusetts

3. Rhode Island

4. Iowa

5. Wisconsin

6. Pennsylvania

7. Connecticut 

8. Maine

9. Minnesota

10. West Virginia

Here are the worst states in the U.S. for mental healthcare, according to the study:

1. Texas

2. Mississippi

3. Alabama

4. Georgia

5. Florida

6. South Carolina

7. Arizona

8. Wyoming

9. Tennessee

10. Idaho
