Florida's Mayo Clinic Receives $1.7M Gift to Help Build Education Simulation Center

The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., has received a $1.7 million gift that will go toward building a simulation center for training purposes, according to a health system news release.

Simulation encompasses a variety of approaches, from trainers that allow surgeons to practice fundamentals and master new techniques to life-size operating rooms where medical teams can practice any imaginable scenario with mannequins that can realistically simulate conditions and "respond" to treatments.

Mayo Clinic has a $15 million fundraising goal to support the center's construction and operation. The center will include a designated area for task trainers, an operating room, intensive care unit, classroom/conference space and extensive audiovisual equipment so that training scenarios can be recorded and reviewed. It will also link with Mayo Clinic's simulation centers in Rochester, Minn., and Phoenix. Mayo Clinic hopes to begin the 18-month-long construction before the end of this year.
