4 HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospitals Receive Subpoenas

Four of Birmingham, Ala.-based HealthSouth's rehabilitation hospitals have received subpoenas from HHS for information about compliance with Medicare claim regulations, according to a Birmingham Business Journal report.

In its statement, HealthSouth said investigators have not made any determinations about fraudulent billing at its four hospitals, according to the report. HealthSouth also said the probe was not a surprise, since federal investigators have been boosting their scrutiny of inpatient rehabilitation providers, according to the report.

The company said it plans to disclose more information about the investigation when it is able to do so, and that the subpoenas will not affect daily operations at its hospitals, according to the report.

The names of the individual hospitals that received subpoenas were not listed in the report.
