Mercy Health technical workers, support staff vote to end 4-week strike

Toledo, Ohio-based Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center's unionized technical workers and support staff voted June 2 to end their strike against the hospital, according to The Blade.

The roughly 900 technical workers and support staff who are represented by the United Automobile Workers are expected to return to their jobs by June 3.

Unionized technical workers, support staff and nurses at St. Vincent have been on strike since May 6 over staffing issues, on-call policies and healthcare costs.

While technical workers and support staff reached a three-year agreement with the hospital, nurses represented by the UAW will continue to strike, according to The Blade.

Union representatives told the publication that some technical workers and support staff are expected to return to their jobs June 3, but hospital employees replaced by temporary workers during the strike might not return until June 8.

The new agreement between the hospital and technical workers and support staff includes a 4 percent raise by this fall, as well as a 15 percent reduction in on-call hours in a year and a half, according to The Blade. The deal also addresses healthcare costs and gives workers back some of their paid time off used during the walkout.
