Colorado's Memorial Health System Attracts 5 Suitors for Lease Deal

The total number of suitors interested in leasing Memorial Health System is now up to five, as HCA-HealthOne and Memorial Health System's current board also have established plans to bid, according to a Colorado Springs Gazette report.

Denver-based HCA-HealthOne owns six acute-care hospitals around Denver and has expressed interest in buying or leasing Memorial before. The system is 60 percent owned by HCA, which is currently in the process of buying out its partner, the Colorado Health Foundation, for $1.45 billion.

Memorial Health System's current board is preparing a proposal to turn the system into an independent non-profit company. Board Chairman Jim Moore said the switch to a non-profit would allow the system to form regional partnerships while keeping decision-making in Colorado Springs.

Phoenix-based Banner Health, Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health, Brentwood, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems and University of Colorado Hospital are also bidding to lease the system.

Update: As of Nov. 4, the parent company of Denver-based Exempla Healthcare brought the potential number of bidders for Memorial Health System to seven. Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System is a national faith-based non-profit hospital company with three hospitals in the Denver area and another in Grand Junction, Colo.
