Caritas Christi Parent Announces Plans to Go National

Ralph de la Torre, CEO of Steward Health Care System, has revealed plans to replicate the company's community hospitals in Massachusetts on a national level, according to a Boston Globe report.

Mr. de la Torre said Boston-based Steward is creating a model of lower-cost, high-volume patient care in a small, centralized structure — different from larger hospital organizations such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic.

Steward is preparing for the goal by deploying information technology and trying new delivery and payment systems, according to the report.

"The key, when you're a regionally focused community-based accountable care organization, is to keep health care local," Mr. de la Torre said in the report. "The main goal of getting bigger in a region is to gain (patient) volume. You can no longer go to the insurance companies and demand higher rates. Those days are gone," he said in the report.

Steward, the new company created by the new owner of Caritas Christi Health Care hospitals, owns six Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts. Steward is owned by Cerberus Capital Management, a New York investment firm.
