Rep. Steve Scalise discharged from hospital 6 weeks after shooting

U.S. House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was discharged from Washington, D.C.-based Medstar Washington Hospital Center July 25, nearly six weeks after he was shot during a congressional baseball practice, according to CNN.

The hospital said in a statement Mr. Scalise "has made excellent progress." He will reportedly begin a "period of intensive inpatient rehabilitation … [and] is looking forward to his return to work once he completes rehabilitation."

Mr. Scalise was critically injured after a gunman opened fire during a congressional baseball practice June 14. He was discharged from the hospital's intensive care unit at the end of June, but was re-admitted in early July over concerns of an infection, according to the report.

"The whip has an intensive period of inpatient rehabilitation ahead of him, but he's very glad to be in this new stage of the process and is very focused on his continued healing and recovery," a spokesperson for Mr. Scalise told CNN in a statement.
