Physician Hospitals of America Applauds House of Representatives

Physician Hospitals of America applauds the passage of a bill containing a provision to help physician-owned hospitals through the House of Representatives yesterday, according to a POH news release.

HR 3630, "The Middle Class Tax Relief & Job Creation Act," contained language that would allow POHs that missed an arbitrary deadline to continue construction, along with those that need to expand in order to meet community demand.

"No one who is serious about healthcare can oppose this provision. Medicare and Medicaid patients deserve access to the nation's highest performing hospitals," PHA President Michael Russell, MD, said in the news release. "Furthermore, [PPACA] creates issues in low capacity and high growth communities by adding 30 million Americans to the insurance rolls. More than half the 265 existing POHs need to expand immediately to meet the needs of their communities."

The bill's passage through the House does not repeal the whole of Section 6001 PPACA, which blocks new construction of POHs. The bill is now headed to the Senate, where it is likely to face some delays, according to a report from The Hill.
