Florida's Jackson Health System Eliminates 189 Jobs

Jackson Health System, based in Miami, has cut 189 jobs in efforts to save money and reduce its debts, according to a Miami Herald news report.

Most of the 189 positions were already vacant, and most of the 49 employees who will be affected will be able to move to other open positions within the health system. The job eliminations will account for an annual savings of approximately $13.3 million, according to the news report. The health system did not disclose any details about what types of positions were eliminated.

The job cuts come after the health system reportedly lost $337 million over the previous two years, according to the news report. Meanwhile, the health system is also attempting to outsource its inmate healthcare in hopes to save another estimated $8 million for this fiscal year. However, system board members are not clear on how much inmate care costs the health system per year.
