Hospital Mass Layoffs Dropped Slightly in First Quarter

Fewer mass layoffs at hospitals occurred in the first quarter of 2011 than in the first quarter of 2010, according to a release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A mass layoff involves at least 50 employees losing their jobs at one hospital.

Ten mass layoffs occurred at hospitals in March, bringing the total for the first quarter to 33, involving at least 2,118 lost jobs.

In comparison, 12 hospital mass layoffs took place in March 2010, with 798 jobs lost. Thirty-six mass layoffs occurred in the first three months of 2010, with 2,516 people claiming unemployment benefits.
