Florida Hospital Association Study Finds Hospital Jobs in State Up 4.3%

A recent study by the University of Florida commissioned by the Florida Hospital Association found that the number full-time equivalent employees at Florida hospitals increased 4.3 percent between 2007 and 2009, according to an FHA news release.

According to the study, hospitals in the state created 79,838 new full-time and part-time jobs in the two year period.

The study also found that the hospitals generate $54 billion in total economic contributions statewide, or 7.34 percent of the state's Gross Domestic Product.

The study also noted that a hypothetical $10 million investment in Medicaid funding to Florida hospitals would increase employment in the Florida economy by 228 high wage jobs, which equals $15.7 million in total economic impact.

"I am proud of the strong financial contribution hospitals provide to our state’s economy," said Lars Houmann, Chair of the Florida Hospital Association Board of Trustees and President/CEO of Florida Hospital Orlando. "This report reminds lawmakers of the importance of thorough thinking before approving budget cuts that impact our hospital employees and the businesses who serve our organizations."
