California's Stanford Hospitals Expansion Plans Approved

City officials have approved Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford University's proposed plans for a $5 billion hospital expansion, according to a Sacramento Bee news report.

Earlier this week, the city council approved ordinances, permits and resolutions for the hospital expansion in an 8-0 vote, bringing a four-year review process to a close, according to the news report. The multibillion-dollar expansion includes adding another 1.3 million square feet to the university's hospitals.

University officials have pushed the proposal, saying the hospitals needs to fulfill standard seismic safety criteria and meet increasing patient demand.
