Minnesota owes CMS $1.9M in unallowable emergency transportation claims, OIG says

Minnesota did not always comply with federal and state regulations when filing claims for Medicaid's nonemergency medical transportation program, according to report from HHS' Office of Inspector General.

The federal government requires each state ensure Medicaid beneficiaries can access transportation to and from providers. From October 2012 through September 2013, the Minnesota Department of Human Services claimed at least $6.4 million in payments for nonemergency medical transportations. Of the 104 claims OIG reviewed, the state properly claimed Medicaid reimbursement for 25.

OIG recommended Minnesota repay the federal government $1.9 million in unallowable claims and bolster is procedures for transporting Medicaid beneficiaries. Minnesota agreed with OIG's recommendations.
