The hospital that was too small to work with Epic

Boulder (Colo.) Community Health, a hospital composed of 2,400 employees, was once too small to work with EHR vendor Epic, hospital CEO and President Robert Vissers, MD, told the Denver Business Journal in a June 11 article.

A couple of years ago, Dr. Vissers reached out to Epic and was told his organization's only option was to enter into a contract with a larger health system using the EHR vendor's software. This would require using a version of the software designed for a larger system, he said.

A few years later, when Epic offered the chance to have an independent version, Boulder Community eagerly accepted, Dr. Vissers said. It was one of the smallest health systems at the time to undertake the costly venture.

"For some systems, it's a tremendous success," he told the publication. "For many, it can be a tremendous risk and cost, and sometimes failure."

Since then, Boulder Community has surpassed larger systems in its use of Epic's software, Dr. Vissers said. He added that the hospital has been acknowledged for maximizing the platform's capabilities, enhancing care for providers and patients.
