Lucile Packard Children's opens $1.2B flagship facility

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford opened its new $1.2 billion hospital Dec. 9, which will now serve as its flagship facility.

The new 521,000-square-foot building adds 149 patient beds to the existing campus, effectively doubling the size of the former campus. In addition, the hospital hired more than 500 new employees to help staff the new facility.

On Saturday more than 100 pediatric patients were moved from the existing hospital to the new building across the street.

President and CEO of Lucile Packard Children's Christopher Dawes called the move day a significant milestone. Adding that "hundreds of staff have prepared for months and months for this day, when this new building becomes part of our working hospital."

The previous flagship pediatric and obstetric hospital will now undergo renovations.
