Dr. Michael Kastan to Lead New Duke University Cancer Center

Michael B. Kastan, MD, a renowned cancer scientist and director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, based in Memphis, Tenn., has been named the executive director of the Duke Cancer Institute in Durham, N.C.

The new Duke Cancer Institute was launched in Nov. 2010 and brings together education, cancer research and patient care into a seamless and unified venture. The cancer institute will be housed in a new, seven-story facility currently under construction.

Dr. Kastan graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., and trained in pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He remained at Johns Hopkins until 1998, when he joined St. Jude as chairman of the department of hematology/oncology. Dr. Kastan has directed St. Jude's cancer center since 2004 and led the center to become the only pediatric hospital designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
