10 ways to measure the success of telehealth services

Measuring satisfaction, changes in in-person clinic use and the development of innovative new programs are important metrics hospitals and health systems can use to analyze the success of their telehealth services, according to a July 27 American Medical Association article.

The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles decided to use 10 key metrics when evaluating the success of their telehealth program and to target areas for improvement.

Here are the 10 metrics they employed:

  1. Volume of virtual visits.

  2. Number of additional appointments made available through telehealth.

  3. Change in the use of in-person clinics.

  4. Number of medical staff trained to use telehealth.

  5. Medical staff satisfaction with telehealth services.

  6. Development of new or innovative models of telehealth.

  7. Patient satisfaction with telehealth services.

  8. Change in no-show rates for in-person visits.

  9. Change in absenteeism for school or work for adult and child patients.

  10. Use of standard of care recommendations.
