Illinois Hospitals, Health Systems Inject $78.7B Into State Economy

The 200 hospitals and health systems within Illinois generate roughly $78.7 billion in state economic activity every year, according to a report from the Illinois Hospital Association (pdf).

The report also found that Illinois hospitals are among the top three employers in roughly half of the state's counties and employ more than 250,000 people statewide.


Other findings from the IHA's report include:

•    Illinois hospital and health system payrolls produce an economic impact of $37 billion, or roughly 47 percent of the total economic impact.

•    State hospitals generate roughly $33.5 billion by spending on goods, services and other related spending.

•    Every Illinois hospital job generates another 1.1 jobs in the state.

•    Illinois hospitals spend an average of $8.2 billion on capital improvements, such as building construction and equipment purchases.
