Average Cost of Medicare HAIs at Pennsylvania Hospitals Tops $21k

The average cost of Medicare patients with a healthcare-associated infection at Pennsylvania hospitals was $21,378 in 2010, while the average Medicaid patient stay with an HAI at Pennsylvania hospitals cost $33,329, according to a report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (pdf).

The Medicare average was more than three times the cost of Medicare patients who did not have an HAI ($6,709), and the Medicaid average was more than five times the cost of those without an HAI ($6,040).


Overall, among Pennsylvania patients who acquired an HAI in 2010, 31.3 percent were readmitted within 30 days due to an infection or complication. Only 6.3 percent of state patients who did not contract an HAI were readmitted within 30 days for an infection or complication.

The average length of stay for patients with an HAI at Pennsylvania hospitals in 2010 was 21.9 days compared with five days of those without an HAI. The most common types of HAIs were surgical site infections (26.8 percent) and urinary tract infections (22 percent).
