Updated sepsis guidelines are out: 4 things to know

The Surviving Sepsis Campaign updated its guidelines for diagnosing and treating sepsis in adults Oct. 4.

Four things to know:

1. The new guidelines place more emphasis on caring for sepsis patients after they are discharged from the intensive care unit.

2. The guidelines were also updated to represent greater geographic and gender diversity than past versions.

3. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign is a joint effort of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

4. The medical societies said the updated guidelines are especially important today, as many seriously ill COVID-19 patients are at risk of developing sepsis.
