The new Seidman Cancer Center at Cleveland's University Hospitals has been performing mock operations, or "mock ops," to test the efficiency of hospital operations and patient flow through various departments, according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report.
The exercise is a standard practice before a hospital's official opening. Seidman nurses, physicians and former patients spent 11 hours going through 43 patient scenarios. The hospital also went through a shift change to test patient hand-offs.
Staff attended orientation sessions after the mock ops, which established optimal times for patient flow. For example, now staff knows how long it should take to transport a patient from the sixth floor to surgery on the second floor.
