South Carolina to Reconsider CON Denial for Hilton Head Hospital Outpatient Center

The South Carolina health board will re-examine its February decision to deny Hilton Head (S.C.) Hospital a certificate of need for a proposed outpatient center in Bluffton, S.C., according to a Savannah Morning News report.

Hilton Head Hospital wanted a hearing to appeal the state's original ruling that the population data and projections did not justify a new facility. Instead, the state is reconsidering its decision. The center would relocate and expand medical imaging services, including bone density and ultrasound, pediatric rehabilitation services, laboratory services and cardiopulmonary services.

Beaufort (S.C.) Memorial Hospital and Savannah, Ga.-based St. Joseph's/Candler Health System had opposed Hilton Head's proposal on the grounds that a new center would negatively impact their operations.

On a related note, Hilton Head Hospital has opposed the state's January decision to allow St. Joseph's/Candler to acquire a CT scanner without first acquiring a certificate of need. The state denied Hilton Head Hospital an appeal hearing to challenge this ruling.
