Pennsylvania's Altoona Regional to Close Seventh Avenue Campus

Altoona (Pa.) Regional Health System is planning to close the former Bon Secours Mercy Hospital in Altoona near the end of March, according to an Altoona Mirror report.

Altoona and Bon Secours-Holy Family Regional Health System, also located in Altoona, merged in 2004. The Bon Secours Mercy site was renamed as the Seventh Avenue Campus of Altoona. Now the system is closing that campus as it completes the consolidation of acute services at its main campus, the Altoona Hospital Campus.

The $60 million consolidation process has been ongoing for three years. Altoona still needs regulatory approval to close Bon Secours. When the hospital does close, it will need to do so all at once. State licensing requires the hospital to offer all acute-care essentials, such as an emergency department, operating room and intensive care unit. Thus, Altoona cannot gradually cease operations within certain departments.

The Seventh Avenue Campus still averages roughly 40 inpatients per day and sees about 32 people each day in its ED.
