Legislation to Let McLaren Health Bypass CON Process for $300M Hospital Fails

The Michigan legislature has rejected a measure to allow Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care to build a new $300 million hospital without a certificate of need, according to a Detroit News report.

McLaren Health wants to move 200 beds from McLaren Oakland in Pontiac, Mich., to a proposed $300 million, 443,000-square-foot hospital on the McLaren Clarkston (Mich.) campus. The system's original application for a new hospital was rejected by the state's certificate of need commission. McLaren is appealing the commission's decision.

Sen. Mike Kowall (R) proposed legislation allowing the health system to bypass the certificate of need process.  Yesterday, the Senate Economic Development Committee passed a revised version of the senator's proposed legislation that did not include a provision for McLaren.

McLaren spokesman Jeff Timmer said the system isn't giving up on its plans for a new hospital, however, according to the report.
