Carolinas HealthCare Gets CON Approval for New Hospital in Fort Mill, Beating Out Tenet and Novant

Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System has received certificate of need approval to build a new hospital in Fort Mill, S.C., beating out rivals Tenet Healthcare and Novant Health, which also applied to develop a hospital in the area, according to a Charlotte Observer report.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control approved Carolinas' plans for a 64-bed hospital in Fort Mill. Tenet, which operates Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C., and Novant, which operates Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, were denied approval. All three systems had already purchased land to build a hospital, according to the report.

The three systems have been battling for rights to develop a new facility in Fort Mill for years. In 2004, the state determined more hospital beds were needed for the area, and in 2006 the state granted Tenet approval to build. However, the other systems appealed the decision, and in April the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the three systems should resubmit bids.

Tenet and Novant may appeal the department's most recent decision.
