California's Sutter Health Receives Quality Grant, Commits to $10 Million Patient Safety Initiative

Sutter Health, based in Sacramento, Calif., has received a $3.6 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to advance clinical quality and has committed to match this amount with an additional $7.2 million to further its patient safety efforts in its hospitals, according to a Sutter Health news release.

Specifically, Sutter Health's Sacramento Sierra Region plans to use the funds to implement processes to reduce the incidence and mortality rates from sepsis and septic shock. It also will use the funds to implement quality improvement programs to support nursing leadership, and to support programs to help patients maintain blood sugar levels within normal ranges.

The Moore foundation had previously awarded Sutter nearly $8.3 million to implement patient safety programs in six Bay Area hospitals, and the current grant expands the quality programs to Sutter hospitals in the greater Sacramento region.
