5 AI-powered medical clinics open in Arizona supermarkets

Phoenix-based Akos Med Clinics opened five new artificial intelligence-powered clinics in Safeway supermarket stores across Arizona.

Patients who visit the supermarket medical clinic start the visit on a tablet or smartphone, registering and providing insurance and payment information. After completed a question and answer, the patient is directed to an exam room where he or she sits in front of a computer screen.

Augmented reality instructs patients how to use the various medical devices to collect information such as weight, temperature, blood pressure and blood oxygen content. Patients are then asked follow-up questions through the tablet and an onsite medical assistant takes lab tests if necessary.

The patient work-up is sent electronically to an Akos provider, who through a video consultation verifies the diagnosis and confirms the treatment plan. In total, the visit takes approximately 20 minutes.

The system charts the visit into patients' existing EHR and bills insurance. Akos has five other AI-powered locations throughout Arizona and plans to open an 11th clinic in Boise, Idaho in March.
