More than 1k Hurley Medical Center nurses, pharmacists picket over contract impasse

More than 1,000 members of the Registered Nurses and Registered Pharmacists of Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., picketed over a contract dispute, MLive.com reports.

Here are five things to know.

1. Union members picketed May 8 to bring attention to their lack of contract with HMC. Union President Pamela Campbell said contract negotiations have been ongoing for more than a year, but remain unresolved, MLive.com reports.

2. Ms. Campbell said there are not "enough nurses to take care of the patients on a daily basis. We have over 36,000 hours of mandatory overtime in a six-month period. The nurses are working very, very hard taking care of the patients and [the nurses are] getting discouraged because [HMC] will not settle in a fair contract with us."

3. The union president added the nurses initially were not offered a raise, but have since been offered a 0.5 percent raise.

4. HMC said in a statement to MLive.com it is "confident that the Registered Nurses and Pharmacists will have a fair contract. Hurley Medical Center prides itself on its history of union collaboration and union contracts that are favorable to both parties."

5. A mediator is assisting the negotiations, according to the report.
