University Hospital May Reduce Charity Care if Kentucky Merger Fails

Officials from Louisville, Ky.-based University Hospital recently said the hospital's future is dismal if it doesn't merge with Louisville-based Jewish & St. Mary's and Lexington, Ky.-based St. Joseph Health System to form a new statewide system, according to a Courier-Journal report.

University Hospital CEO James Taylor has said that the hospital may have to cut its charity care if it is unable to merge. The hospital can still manage to pay its bills, according to the report, but Mr. Taylor has said it lacks the space to add beds and expand business. It's also having a difficult time addressing infrastructural and equipment needs, according to the report.

One lawyer from Louisville cited in the report said University Hospital is making a "Chicken Little argument," in that it plays on a strategy where "the sky is falling" and something needs to be done quickly without close analysis.

University Hospital's profits more than tripled from 2009-2010, ending at $12.8 million, according to the report.
