This Week in Transactions: Dec. 31 - Jan. 7

The following 11 hospital and healthcare transactions occurred within the past week.

1. Toledo-based ProMedica Health System said the Federal Trade Commission's new antitrust challenge of its acquisition of a 198-bed hospital is inconsistent with healthcare reform. ProMedica has been ordered to appear before an FTC administrative law judge for a May 31 trial in Washington, D.C.

2. Phoebe Putney Hospital, a non-profit hospital in Albany, Ga., plans to complete its acquisition of Palmyra Medical Center, a for-profit also in Albany, in February.

3. Kalamazoo-based Bronson Healthcare Group and Battle Creek (Mich.) Health System are currently working toward integrating, which could now include a partnership with Western Michigan University and Borgess Health, both located in Kalamazoo, to develop a medical school.

4. Irving Place Capital, a middle-market private equity firm, announced it will acquire National Surgical Hospitals, an owner and operator of 14 surgical hospitals and seven ambulatory surgery centers located in 10 states.

5. Hoboken (N.J.) University Medical Center signed a letter of intent with HUMC Holdco.

6. Memorial Health System, which is owned and operated by the city of Colorado Springs (Colo.), is continuing to move forward its plans to convert into a community non-profit.

7. The board of commissioners for Beaufort Regional Health System in Washington, N.C., approved an affiliation with Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, despite a recommendation from its medical staff to affiliate with Greenville, N.C.-based University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. At least one physician practicing at Beaufort has said he will end his affiliation with the hospital if it moves forward with an affiliation with CHS.

8. Charlotte, N.C.-based MedCath Corporation completed the sale of the assets of Texsan Heart Hospital in San Antonio to Methodist Healthcare System, also in San Antonio.

9. Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates completed the sale of 140-bed Riley Hospital in Meridian, Miss., to Anderson Regional Medical Center, also in Meridian.

10. Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems, a for-profit, completed its acquisition of eight-hospital Detroit Medical Center.

11. Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind., acquired the Vincennes (Ind.) Surgery Center.
