Medical College of Wisconsin Looks for Rural Hospital Partner to Meet Primary Care Physician Demand

In order to meet the rising demand for primary care physicians, the Medical College of Wisconsin is searching for a hospital partner to open a satellite campus in rural Wisconsin, according to a Milwaukee Business Journal report.

Thus far, the medical school has visited Ministry Health Care in Marshfield, Wis., Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wis., and Bellin Health Care Systems in Green Bay, Wis. It also plans on visiting ThedaCare in Appleton, Wis., QuadMed in Sussex, Wis., Dean Health System in Madison, Wis., and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, also in Madison. The satellite campus would be placed at a rural location within the health system.

The new Medical College of Wisconsin branch aims to help increase the number of PCPs for rural Wisconsin residents. According to the report, there are about 80 PCPs per 100,000 rural Wisconsin residents compared with 102 PCPs per 100,000 urban and suburban residents. Overall, Wisconsin is short a total 374 primary care physicians across roughly half of its counties.
