County to Hold Hearing on Jackson Health's Thousand-Employee Layoff Plan

Miami-Dade County in Florida will hold a public hearing over Jackson Health System's plan to eliminate 1,117 jobs, according to a Miami Herald report.

County Commission Chairman Joe Martinez agreed to the hearing yesterday after members of local unions signed a petition requesting it. Mr. Martinez called the layoff plans "devastating," according to the report.

Jackson is planning to fire 922 people and cut 195 vacant positions. It would then hire 355 part-time employees to meet the hospitals' flexible staffing needs as patient flow increases and decreases.

The hospital system has lost roughly $420 million in the past three years. Hospital officials say the layoffs will not hurt patient care, but will make the hospital more efficient.

The hearing may take place March 22, according to the report.
