Salem Hospital in Oregon Creates 3-Phase Plan to Save Pediatrics Program

Salem (Ore.) Hospital announced it will not close its inpatient pediatrics program.

Earlier this year Salem Hospital reported the pediatrics program may need to close due to low patient volume. The hospital established four teams of 50 stakeholders to study the issue over several months. The teams developed a three-phase plan that will enable the hospital to retain its program and continue offering inpatient pediatric care.

In the first phase, the pediatric program will move to share space in the mother-baby unit in the hospital's Family Birth Center. The move, which is tentatively scheduled for October, is designed to save the hospital labor costs.

During the second phase, Salem Hospital will partner with specialists to care for hospitalized pediatric patients and will use telemedicine more often to allow pediatric patients to receive care close to home. In addition, the hospital will develop a long-term vision for pediatrics.

In the final phase, the hospital will increase public awareness about its pediatrics program and explore philanthropic opportunities.
