$864M UConn Health Center Expansion Gains Final Approval

The Connecticut House of Representatives gave final legislative approval on an $864 million proposal by the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington that aims to expand the hospital's medical and dental schools and to build a new hospital on its Farmington Campus, according to a Hartford Courant report.

The state Senate passed the measure last week, according to a Bloomberg report. Gov. Dannel Malloy will now sign the legislation, which is expected to create 16,400 jobs and generate $4.6 billion by 2037.

It also would add 100 students to the medical school, 48 students to the dental school, 50 bioscience researchers and nearly 3,000 construction jobs to finish the task by 2018.

A $318 million tower, a $203 ambulatory care center and a $163 million renovation to the John Dempsey Hospital tower are also included in the proposal, which more than doubles former Gov. M. Jodi Rell's 2010 proposal.

Parts of last year's proposal that are still included are funding for St. Francis (Conn.) Hospital and Medical Center, Bristol (Conn.) Hospital and Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
