Miami's Jackson Memorial to repay $412M in Medicaid payments

Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami erroneously received $412 million in federal Medicaid payments and should repay the government, according to a report from the Office of Inspector General.

The audit found most of the unallowable Medicaid payments, $347.5 million, reflected unclaimable medical expenses. These included providing nonemergency care to undocumented persons and providing outpatient care to prisoners, among other services, according to the audit.

Jackson Memorial disagreed with most of the OIG's findings. The hospital said OIG incorrectly determined it should offset Medicare and commercial insurance payments against costs for patients who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. OIG stood by its findings with one exception, recommending Florida establish procedures for Jackson Memorial to return the funds.
