Ascension Texas confirms layoffs

St. Louis-based Ascension has completed layoffs in Texas, the health system confirmed.

A statement shared with Becker's says the layoffs primarily affected nonclinical support roles. The health system declined to specify to Becker's the number of employees or positions affected.

Ascension has Texas locations in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Kyle and Waco, according to its website.

"The global COVID-19 pandemic has taken a significant operational toll on health systems across the country, and Ascension Texas is no exception," the health system said. "We continue to evolve how we deliver care in this challenging environment and further align our strategies and structure to best support patient care initiatives in order to ensure the long-term strength of our organization as we continue to deliver compassionate, personalized care to all."

Ascension also said it made all efforts "to minimize the impact on patient care at the bedside and we focused primarily on nonclinical support roles."

Ascension, a 139-hospital nonprofit health system with about 139,000 employees, also recently confirmed that its St. Vincent's Riverside in Jacksonville, Fla., will be ending maternity care at the hospital later this year, affecting 68 jobs. In Texas, nurses at Austin-based Ascension Seton Medical Center voted to unionize in September.
