MercyOne Iowa hospital to close in September

Des Moines, Iowa-based MercyOne shared plans to close its MercyOne Primghar (Iowa) Medical Center by Sept. 30.

The closure comes as MercyOne, which is part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, aims to redesign care in the Primghar area due to existing economic and workforce challenges, according to a July 26 news release shared with Becker's

Along with the closure, MercyOne will consolidate MercyOne Paulina Family Medicine and MercyOne Sutherland Family medicine with Primghar Family Medicine, which will stay open.

"To continue our Mission of providing high-quality patient care, MercyOne will continuously evaluate how we can use resources to adapt and meet the current needs of our communities and our state," Bob Ritz, president and CEO of MercyOne, said in the release. "Providing patient and colleague care will always be our top priority. We will work diligently to increase access to care and improve health care across Iowa."

The health system will notify patients of the changes to discuss their options for care moving forward. Employees affected by the consolidation and closure will also be given the opportunity to transfer to other MercyOne positions. The health system's human resources team will also support the employees during the change.
