Ohio Hospitals Offer Generous CEO Pay to Get "Best Person Available"

Compensation for several hospital and health system CEOs in southwest Ohio have raised eyebrows in the area — former CEO of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Michael Anderson made $4.2 million when he retired at the end of 2009 — but hospitals argue the salaries help keep the best talent in the area, according to a Middletown Journal report.

"You've got to have the absolute best person available to be your leader," said Thomas Cody, chairman of the board of trustees of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, in the report.

Here are seven other hospital executives and their 2010 compensation figures:

•    Doug McNeill, former CEO of Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, Ohio: $2.6 million ($1.2 million in retirement and other deferred compensation)
•    Michael Connelly, JD, CEO of Catholic Health Partners in Cincinnati: $2.3 million
•    James May, CEO of Mercy Health in Cincinnati: $1.1 million
•    Thomas Urban, CEO of Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital in Cincinnati: $613,098
•    Lynn Oswald, former CEO of Fort Hamilton (Ohio) Hospital: $435,000
•    James Kingsbury, CEO of University of Cincinnati Health: $321,433 (hired in the middle of 2010, so only partial compensation total)
•    Kevin Joseph, MD, CEO of West Chester (Ohio) Hospital: $259,605
