Executives at MetroHealth in Cleveland Earn Bonuses Despite Losses

In the first three months of fiscal year 2013, Cleveland-based MetroHealth System lost $6.5 million, but the county-owned system still doled out $738,000 in bonuses and extra compensation to several executives, according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report.

County leaders questioned the move, saying, "It seems obvious that the decision to make bonus payments to executive-level employees would need to be part of a well-designed and detailed evaluation process that would withstand public scrutiny," according to the report.

MetroHealth Board Chairman Thomas McDonald told the Plain Dealer the bonuses, which also went to former CEO Mark Moran, are outlined in each executive's compensation contract and were based on goals achieved in 2012. In addition, he said executive pay must be competitive with other local health systems, such as Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.
