Texas Children's opens $245M pavilion

Texas Children's opened a new $245 million medical tower as it converted a former Baylor College of Medicine clinic into a 190,000-square foot women's health tower, Houston Business Journal reported Aug. 7.

With the $245 million in financing, Texas Children's has invested $1 billion in women's health over the past 12 years. Through the expansion, Texas Children's expects to deliver more babies.

The new tower is connected to Texas Children's Main Tower through a sky bridge. The pavilion was created with the goal of reducing health inequities.

"I've said for years that one of the biggest problems in the world is gender inequality across the board, and that certainly applies in medicine and in health care," Texas Children's CEO Mark Wallace told the Houston Business Journal. "One of the reasons why access is as challenging as it is in the Greater Houston area [is that] we have such a large, uninsured population. And so that's something that Texas Children's Hospital has embraced, since our inception."
