8 ED Expansions to Meet Growing Patient Volume

Here are eight emergency department expansions announced in the past three months that are designed to increase capacity for growing patient volumes. The expansions are listed in reverse chronological order.

1. Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale announced the $100,000 expansion of its emergency department to manage increasing patient volume. TRMC at Sunnyvale had 18,000 ED visits in 2010 and 26,000 in 2011. The hospital expects to see nearly 30,000 ED patients this year.

2. Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., announced it has received a certificate of need from the state to expand its emergency department. The hospital served more than 65,000 ED patients last year, expects to see approximately 70,000 ED patients this year and 80,000 patients in 2016 if current growth patterns continue.

3. Putnam, Conn.-based Day Kimball Healthcare announced the kick-off of construction of its $10 million new emergency department at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. The current ED was designed to accommodate 18,000 annual patient visits. Currently, the ED has approximately 30,000 annual visits, and hospital officials predict volume will increase.

4. Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas, part of Irving, Texas-based Christus Health, is renovating the emergency department at its Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg in Kingsville, Texas. The ED saw 18,244 visits in fiscal year 2010 compared with 19,383 patients in FY 2012.

5. Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass., is planning a 26,500-square-foot emergency department expansion. The ED was built to accommodate 60,000 patients, but the ED saw 91,000 patients last year and expects to see 92,000 this year.

6. Fort Hamilton (Ohio) Hospital has begun a $5 million emergency department expansion and renovation project. Last year, Fort Hamilton had approximately 36,000 ED patient visits, and it is on track to see more than 40,000 patient visits this year. The expansion will allow the ED to accommodate more than 52,000 patients a year.

7. Naval Medical Center San Diego announced the opening of its new $10.1 million emergency department. The old ED was designed to accommodate 30,000 patients a year, but the hospital currently sees roughly 66,000 to 70,000 ED patients a year. The hospital hopes the new ED will be able to treat 75,000 patients a year, according to the release.

8. Johnston County Medical Center in Smithfield, N.C., plans to remodel its emergency department. The hospital's ED was designed to accommodate roughly 37,000 patients a year, but currently serves nearly 50,000 patients a year, according to the report. The remodeling project would increase capacity by approximately 13,000 patients annually.
