Carle Foundation Hospital Receives CON for ED Expansion

Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., announced it has received a certificate of need from the state to expand its emergency department.

The hospital will add nearly 14,000 square feet and 17 acute emergency beds, bringing the total to 39. The ED expansion will also include an additional trauma room and safe room, a new MRI, two CTs, two X-ray rooms and an ultrasound room in a dedicated radiology suite.

The expansion is designed to meet increasing demand. The hospital served more than 65,000 ED patients last year. Michael Swindle, MD, chairman of the ED, said the hospital expects to see approximately 70,000 ED patients this year and 80,000 patients in 2016 if current growth patterns continue, according to a News-Gazette report

The hospital plans to begin construction this fall and expects to complete the project in 2014.
