Duke Earns Praise for Community Care Model in North Carolina

Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., has garnered national attention, including that from the Obama administration, for its experiment in community care, according to a Washington Post report.

After partnering with Durham’s Federally Qualified Health Center, Duke University Hospital collaborated with Lincoln Community Health Center, an outpatient facility based in Durham, N.C., and founded three clinics. The clinics focus on reducing chronic illnesses that prompt uninsured patients to make frequent ED visits. In turn, the clinics have reduced costs and improved race relations within the community.

The community care model has reduced the number of expensive and unnecessary ED bills Duke would pay when the patient could not, according to the report. In 2009, Duke claimed it spent $45 million in unreimbursed care for patients who were unable to pay, along with another $50 million when Medicaid reimbursements didn’t completely cover bills.
