Brigham and Women's Offers Paid High School Internships to Boost Interest in Healthcare

Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston has seen success in fostering interest in healthcare among high school students through its Student Success Jobs Program, according to an MSNBC report.

The Student Success Jobs Program, which started at Brigham and Women's more than a decade ago, was designed to encourage students' excitement about studying science, healthcare and medicine. Research has shown lagging student interest in math and science, and the healthcare industry is well aware of the physician and nurse shortages it faces.

The paid internship program matches students with participating Brigham and Women's physicians, who serve as mentors and tutors. The students are also given "real tasks" to give them a taste of work in the healthcare field, according to the report.
