Boone Memorial in West Virginia Transfers From County-Owned to Non-Profit

Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison, W.Va., is a public, county-owned hospital no more, as it officially transitioned to a community, non-profit entity.

BMH Administrator Tommy Mullins said in a news release the hospital will operate in the same manner. The main difference is that BMH has a 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service, which will make it easier for the hospital to raise funds.

BMH, which had been a county-owned hospital since it opened in 1964, plans to build a new hospital over the next few years. The ownership transition process took more than three years, but the hospital now believes the financing for the hospital can be easier to obtain.

"I feel there are advantages to us being non-profit, especially when trying to raise funds to build a new facility," Mr. Mullins said in the release. "The new regulations are all set for the protection of the public and to allow BMH to provide quality healthcare for many more years to come. Although we have to adhere to new regulations the hospital will run much the same as before."
