Efforts to implement a health insurance exchange in Maine have stalled in the state Legislature, as arguments to overturn the federal healthcare reform law begin in the U.S. Supreme Court, according to an Online Sentinel report.
Republicans on the legislative committee that handles healthcare reform voted earlier this month against creating a health insurance exchange. The issue is expected to reach the Legislature as soon as this week.
The two-year-old Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires each state to implement its own exchange or invite the government to set one up for them. Maine has been moving forward with plans to create a state-run exchange and has already spent about $1 million in federal grant money to plan for the exchange.
Maine is also one of 26 states that sued the Obama administration to overturn a central provision of the reform law, which requires individuals to buy insurance.
