Closing Marian Community Hospital in Pennsylvania to Set Down $19M in Liabilities

At the end of November, Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pa., announced it will be closing in February, and it will leave behind more than $19 million in liabilities, according to a Scranton Times Tribune report.

Tax forms indicated the hospital had about $16.8 million in assets at the end of 2010, and total liabilities were nearly $36 million, according to the report. A deficit of about $19.2 million in liabilities has encompassed the hospital's 2011 fiscal year.

Maxis Health System, the hospital's parent company, attributed the closure to ongoing financial pressures and a dwindling patient population. In Jan. 2010, Marian Community Hospital, a 70-bed hospital at the time, scaled back to 35 beds. For the past six months, the hospital has had roughly 20 inpatients per day, according to the report.

Marian Community Hospital reportedly approached every health system in the region, including Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, to initiate a sale but found no willing partners.
